2.3 Trailer Structural Analysis and Timeline

Film trailers are designed to advertise and generate buzz for a film. Teaser trailers are shorter than official trailers and have several differences such as the absence of voiceovers and we don't usually see the aggressor just the victim. Trailers also have a pattern of revealing the premise of the film so that the viewer is enticed and makes them want to see more.

WEEK 2 TASK 4

Write a 300 word analysis of how the following themes and sub-texts are raised in the film (with examples of scenes that do so) - what is the film trying to say, particularly through its ending? a) Teen Punishment b) Gender & Sexuality c) Yonic & Phallic Imagery Teen Punishment Teen Punishment is depicted very explicitly in the film. The most significant example of this is when the Athlete and the Slut are about to have sex and then they’re attacked by the antagonists. In this example, the film is trying to warn teenagers from participating in pre-marital sex as it is considered a sin in several religions and is form of giving yourself away spiritually as well as physically. Gender & Sexuality In the film the men are shown to take the lead initially but the female character begins to adopt masculine traits. WEEK 2 – TASK 3 Using your notes from class on sub-genre and Horror conventions, write a 300-word summary of HOW the film makes interesting use of the conventions of Horror and Subgenres you have studied Cabin in the Woods is horror comedy film that features several different sub genres within it. It’s main sub-genre is the slasher genre with the prevailing theme of teen punishment, acting as a cautionary tale for sinning. The film makes the theme distinct by firstly, having a cast of young adults playing common stock characters that would be in a teen punishment film such as; the athlete, the slut, the scholar, the fool and the virgin or final girl. As expected, the slut character is attacked and killed first followed by her boyfriend after they begin a sexual encounter. This is a common convention in horror films as sexual intercourse in our world can be considered a sin which is in turn punished by being sent to hell. 12 Icons of Horrors

There are many icons of horror that convey character, theme or a motifs for the genre.   RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS Religion is often a significant theme in horror movies such as The Exorcist or The Rite. Symbols that appear frequently in them are crucifixes, satanic symbols or voodoo. SYMBOLS OF DEATH Death is represented through props and motifs; coffins, gravestones or skeletons. For example in the film Psycho taxidermy birds are a physical representation of one of the characters trying to keep the spirit of his mother alive after death. COLOURS Colours usually symbols the theme of the film or have connotations of good and evil. In the Red Riding Hood poster the main colours are red and black, Red has connotations of blood, danger or lust whilst black has connotations of death and danger. LIGHT Light in the horror genre symbolise hope, escape or even death. For example sunlight makes people feel comfortable and happy which juxtaposes the concept of horror. I
